About the workshop facilitator

Valerie Walawender, a conceptual artist and social activist, focuses her work on themes concerning "issues of access," stigma, prejudice, respect and  compassion. Committed to deepening her own understanding of these issues, Ms. Walawender created the Faces In The Crowd™ Workshop Series to catalyze creativity, compassion, and deeper awareness in the world.

Recognized for her expertise in the complexity and richness of human relationships, Ms. Walawender is the recipient of a fellowship from the Chautauqua County Council on the Arts and several grants. She has created many community initiatives including the Springville 3-C program, the Community Challenge Program and the Pied Piper Program.

Ms. Walawender, a NYS certified teacher with a B.F.A. in art, is seeking her Masters degree with Empire State College. Her background includes work as an exhibit specialist for both the Miami Metrozoo and Buenos Aires Zoo, Certified National Geographic Teacher Consultant, glass sculptor, advertising director for a national manufacturer; writer of newspaper columns, and documentary  photography.

She is the inventor of Faces In The Crowd™: Diversity, Sensitivity Development, & Violence Prevention Workshops and has been awarded a patent for this unique program.
